"News From Diversity four"
Sept 20, 2000
Greetings,
It's been a busy time at Diversity since our grand opening
on May 6th. In addition to inviting you to our Thursday night
discussion group this week, I thought I'd take this opportunity
to let you know what we've been up to ...and some of the things
we're planning for the future.
- New art is coming in to Diversity at an encouraging rate.
There are currently 23 local & regional artists showing
their work here.
- Solo exhibitions are available to all artists at Diversity.
There has already been one solo exhibition (Paula Scheuneman)
and another is scheduled for November. (Julie Bridges)
- Diversity organized a successful art exhibit for the Labor Day
festival at the Museum of West Louisiana. The exhibit received
front page coverage in the local Leesville, Louisiana newspaper.
- In July, Diversity hosted a successful art camp for young
people - another camp is scheduled for October 7th.
- Diversity participated in Fort Polk's "Super Sign-Up" publicity
program.
- We're continuing our bi-weekly artist discussion group at the
gallery. (every other Thursday night at 7PM)
- Diversity participated in the Leesville Lion's Club annual
benefit telethon - just a block north of Diversity in downtown
Leesville at "Celebrations."
- Diversity has begun the building of it's virtual home on the
internet at: www.diversearts.com
- An excellent feature story on Diversity was published in the
Alexandria Town Talk newspaper August 10th.
Not too bad for our first 5 months, don't you think? Within our
first year we hope to do a lot more. We'd like to:
- create more exhibition space by renovating the front hallway
space to include track lighting (scheduled to be finished by
Julie's show in November of this year)
- a "Holiday Season Show & Sale" (the actual name is yet to be
decided) is planned for the entire month of December. We want
to advertise this as much as possible - in plenty of time for
all of those potential Santas to buy original art
- begin a bi-monthly Diversity newsletter (both email & postal) to
be sent to a broad selection of people. (artists and non-artists
alike) We want to reach anyone who's interested in supporting
the arts in our area
- We're hoping to pursue a closer connection with local art
education programs including possible student tours/field trips
to Diversity. Some of the local art teachers have contacted
us about this.
- A possible "Mardi Gras Mojo" (actual name uncertain) exhibit is
planned for Feb/Mar 2001
- A complete update of Diversity's website is also on our "to do"
list. We want to provide online exhibition space for every artist
and online sales of art work.
- We also want to discuss a possible exhibit of the work of
H.E. Werner. Werner was a well-known primitive, naive artist in
Leesville in the 1950's / 60s. Those interested in the history of
this area might also be interested in a exhibit of his work.
- Everyone tells us that we need a bigger sign. So we're hoping
to install a unique outdoor sign for Diversity - to make our
presence better known in downtown Leesville.
Whadayathink?
We'd love your feedback on these ideas!
Please feel free to email us or come by the gallery. Or if you
prefer, join us in the discussion group this Thursday night
(Sept. 21st @ 7PM) at Diversity. All artists are welcome!
