ART AUCTION

A week ago, some of us met at Isabelle's home to finalize plans for Diversity's upcoming art auction. We had a great time and also came up with some specific ideas:

The auction will be both at Diversity AND online during November & December. Online support will be provided through Ebay's "Auction for America" and a new webpage on Diversity's website. All proceeds from the auction will go directly to The American Red Cross fund to support the victims of the recent terrorism in the US.

In addition to Diversity's group, we'll recruit other local & regional artists, the more the merrier.

A major newspaper advertising campaign to include Leesville, DeRidder, Fort Polk, Alexandria and Lake Charles will be published during the month of November (in time for the holiday spending madness) The ads will contain all the names of those artists who have donated work for the auction.

This is a good opportunity for you to let the area know that you're both an active artist and someone who supports the victims of terrorism.

We ask for only one thing -

permission to photograph whatever work you'd like to donate. It can be work that's already here at Diversity or work that you have at your studio. Isabelle or I will be glad to come to your studio to take pictures of your work to put on the net.

What could be easier than that?

We currently have 8 artists who have generously volunteered to donate work. Why not add your name to that list?

MURAL PROJECT IN LEESVILLE

During a recent photography class at NSU/Ft.Polk, I met Joe Martinez. In addition to being a photography nut, Joe is the manager of the Leesville State School. Some of you may know that the State School's building was the original Leesville High School building.

Joe has a wonderful plan to convert a huge wall in the school's gymnasium to a public mural. We'd like to find some kind of funding for this project so that an artist/s can be paid to do the work. The Leesville State School is a publicly funded institution (not a non-profit) so it might take some creative funding, but if you can help, please let us know.

It's a great opportunity to have your work in a permanent public space.

DIVERSITY'S ARTS LIBRARY

Our dear friend, Alice Story, came by the gallery last week to check out the new arts library. A description of her visit can be found online at:

http://www.thetowntalk.com/html/D5EAAAB8-2752-4A36-9DF1-FB8D9BEEA92D.shtml

For those who haven't discovered it yet, buy yourself a Thursday edition of the Alexandria Town Talk each week. The features section really is the best source for local and regional arts and cultural events in our area.

By the way, does anyone have enough free time to spend organizing the arts library? We need someone who will be able to enter every item into a database of some sort.

FAMILY ARTS DAY - NOVEMBER 10th

Paula Scheuneman will be the main art instructor for a new activity for young people at the Leesville Neighborhood Center on Saturday, November 10th. If you're interested in sharing the visual arts with young people, please feel free to join us that morning. I'm sure we'll need volunteers/observers for that day. Call for details at the gallery: 392-8540 or Paula: 392-9957

PLANNING THE CALENDAR FOR 2002

Even though it goes against my grain to plan so far ahead for anything - it's probably a good idea - so that we can advertise Diversity's events in some state-wide publications.

Would you like to show your work to our community? Or is there something else that you'd like to do with Diversity's space? It's open to anyone - poets, musicians - anyone doing original work in any medium.

I have a couple of things in mind for next year, including an exhibit of works in glass and a historical exhibit of the works of H.E. Werner - but that still leaves a LOT of open space on the schedule. Speak up and reserve your space on the calendar.

DIVERSITY WEBSITE UPDATES

I'm thinking that the Diversity site needs a major overhaul but in the meantime check out these new updates:
